Liz Lynne MEP Member of the Subcommittee on Human Rights
The Liberal Democrats have been vindicated after a leaked Downing Street document proves a six month challenge to the UK's Presidency of the EU over extraordinary rendition was not in vain.
Speaking from the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Liz Lynne, Lib Dem MEP for the West Midlands and Member of the Subcommittee on Human Rights, said today:
"Evidence exposed today proves that Jack Straw knew in 1998 that the Clinton administration was propositioning EU Member States to collude in its practice of extraordinary rendition.
"In July, the Lib Dems challenged Douglas Alexander over mounting evidence that EU Member States were complicit in "torture flights" and demanded an investigation. Mounting evidence was brushed aside as the UK Presidency continued its "See no Evil, Hear No Evil" policy."
"Britons are demanding answers. We are working hard to ensure they get them. The UK and EU cannot sustain their "Spin not Sin" attitude."
