Sir Menzies Campbell MP, Acting Leader of the Liberal Democrats, speaking on Holocaust Memorial Day today called on the international community to strengthen its resolve to defend and protect human rights.
Sir Menzies said "The Holocaust was an event of sustained depravity and a catastrophe for mankind. Its victims must never be forgotten. This national commemoration is not only a memorial to their lives but represents a shared determination to fight racism, intolerance and evil, wherever it is found.
"We must acknowledge, understand and remember the crimes of the past, so to protect future generations. Holocaust Memorial Day offers us the opportunity to reflect on the horrors of the Holocaust, genocide and other crimes against humanity, and to learn the lessons of the past.
"Still today there are those who suffer from the gravest atrocities. We must strengthen our resolve to prevent such crimes, and to defend and protect universal human rights."
