In response to figures showing that more than 1,000 members of the British military have deserted the armed forces since the start of the 2003 Iraq war, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defence secretary, Nick Harvey MP said "These are astonishing figures which show how much pressure the armed forces are under with dangerous missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, often being undertaken with inadequate resources.
"The vast majority of British troops are doing a great job but this is a staggering number of deserters which should tell the MoD something.
"It also makes a nonsense of the redundancies planned in the armed forces."
