Pupils at Monkspath Junior & Infant School were delighted when local MP Lorely Burt took time out of her busy schedule, to offer her congratulations on becoming a Rights Respecting School.
Monkspath School is the first in the borough to achieve the UNICEF UK Level 1 Rights Respecting School Award and the visit by Lorely, which fell on the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), was to understand more about what this means to the children at the school.
The team of pupils responsible for communicating the ethos of a Rights Respecting School across all year groups gave Lorely a tour and explained how the UNCRC enhances pupils' understanding of the consequences of individual and group actions on the rights of others locally and globally.
Speaking about the visit, Lorely said "I am very impressed with all the work the children have been doing and have learnt a lot. It is so important that children learn to respect each other and the environment as well as develop a positive understanding of their basic rights and responsibilities."
