Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt has called for more support for green businesses as pressure builds for a deal at the crucial UN climate change summit in Copenhagen this week.

The Liberal Democrat Small Business Spokesperson said local businesses wanted to learn how to go green including advice on procurement, energy saving and other aspects of green business that help protect communities and the environment.

Lorely Burt said:

"Liberal Democrat MPs are pushing for global agreement in Copenhagen, providing leadership for an international framework that will enable each country to manage a transition to a low-carbon economy.

"There is still much more we can do locally, and I want to see Solihull Council and Advantage West Midlands giving more support to businesses who want to protect the environment but do not know where to start in reviewing their business operations.

"I believe that there is a huge opportunity for businesses to grow or find new markets by going green even in the downturn, strengthening the economy, creating new jobs and improving the quality of peoples' lives. Businesses in Solihull who want to play their part would reap the rewards by reducing their own energy costs as well as CO2 emissions, so it makes business sense to green business activity."

In Parliament the Liberal Democrats are the leading party on tackling climate change. Liberal Democrat policies go furthest on cutting carbon emissions, generating renewable energy and on insulating homes. Liberal Democrat policies will make Britain carbon neutral by 2050 - and by 2020 will have brought our emissions down to the level scientists say will stop climate change.
