Hereford's Liberal Democrat MP, Paul Keetch has supported celebrations as February 2010 marks one hundred years of support for jobseekers after the opening in 1910 of Britain's first 62 Labour Exchanges, the forefather of today's Jobcentre Plus.
The MP visited Hereford's Jobcentre Plus as part of the celebrations and met with the manager and staff as well as job seekers on a tour of the premises and facilities.
Commenting, the MP said, "The first Labour Exchanges were the result of a radical new concept bringing together people looking for work and employers looking for workers. Since those burgeoning days the Exchanges have transformed into the modern Jobcentres such as the one in Hereford which I was invited to visit."
"The staff are incredibly hardworking and dedicated, especially in these difficult economic times when their workload has significantly increased. I would encourage all those currently looking for work to make use of the job search facilities within the Jobcentre and to meet with one of the advisors who offer interviews to discuss work, training and financial support services."
