Independent shopkeepers raised their concerns and highlighted the key issues affecting them during a face to face meeting with Liberal Democrat Shadow Small Business Spokeswoman and Solihull MP Lorely Burt

Concerns about rising business crime, the sustainability of communities, competition from supermarkets and the tobacco display ban were aired during the hour long meeting which had been organised by the National Federation of Retail Newsagents - a trade organisation representing the interests of independent newsagents and convenience store owners.

Speaking afterwards NFRN national vice president Parminder Singh said: "We welcomed the opportunity to give Ms Burt a real insight into the issues that independent retailers face on a daily basis. It is vital that our members' voices are heard loudly and clearly."

And he added: "Independent retailers are facing many challenges at present and we need the support of the government to create a trading environment which allows us not only to operate profitably but contribute fully to the economy."

Mrs Burt, who has twice won the Federation of Small Business' business friendly parliamentarian award said: "It has been extremely useful seeing what life running a small shop is like. I look forward to continuing my work with the independent shop owners in my constituency to see what more we can do to help develop their businesses."

"If any shop owner is having problems I ask that they please do not hesitate to contact me at my constituency office on 0121 706 9365"
