Government fails to protect children from smoking

7.03.00am GMT Fri 30th Dec 2005

Steve Webb MP, Lib Dem Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions

Commenting on plans to provide children with free nicotine patches, Steve Webb MP, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary said:

"The Government's half hearted attempt to combat smoking fails to protect the most vulnerable from the disastrous effects of tobacco.

"It is still far too easy for children to get access to tobacco and alcohol. Too often shopkeepers selling cigarettes to youngsters are getting away with a slap on the wrist.

"Labour's failure to restrict smoking in the workplace will result in fewer people giving up and children being exposed to smoking at all levels of society."
