Paymaster General creating ludicrous excuses to avoid independent review of Tax Credit fraud - Burt

Commenting on evidence given by the Paymaster General, Dawn Primarolo MP, to the Treasury Sub-Committee today, Liberal Democrat committee member, Lorely Burt MP said "The Paymaster General's refusal to commission an independent review into the extent of tax credit fraud must not be allowed to stand. Her justification for the refusal was ludicrous.

"She said there was no need for an independent review because work is currently being conducted on a sample of cases from three years ago.

"This, as she well knows, is not the same as proper scrutiny of how Ministers have responded to the explosion in attacks by organised criminal gangs over the last year.

"The Paymaster General should think carefully about her understanding of accountability and reconsider the case for an independent review."
