Axe the Tax! Liberal Democrats again call for Council Tax to be axed as survey shows big increases across the Country5.19.15pm GMT Mon 20th Feb 2006 According to a Times Survey of 200 councils across the country Council Tax bills are to increase by more than twice the level of inflation this year, marking a doubling of the property tax in just ten years. The Liberal Democrats have re-stated their position that Council Tax should be axed and replaced with a fairer form of taxation. Liberal Democrat spokesperson Sarah Teather said "Every year the pension creeps up in line with prices, but Council Tax soars. With pensioners likely to be denied their £200 rebate this year, millions will struggle more than ever to meet their bills. The whole local government finance system is broken, and the only way to fix it is to scrap Council Tax. How many people need to go to prison in protest before Labour acknowledges that Council Tax must be scrapped?"
