Ministers complacency over tuition fees alarming - Davey

6.23.01pm GMT Wed 1st Mar 2006

Speaking as the NUS lobby parliament about the possible lifting of the cap on tuition fees, Liberal Democrat Shadow Education Secretary, Edward Davey MP will say "Ministers complacency about the impact of tuition and top-up fees must be alarming for students, future students and their parents.

"The truth is that getting saddled with thousands of pounds worth of debt won't just discourage people from going to university but will change their choice of career, when thy get married and when they can afford to buy a house. These are very serious issues and the idea that the Government is keen to lift the cap on fees without addressing them is extremely worrying.

"Deciding to study for a degree should be based on someone's academic ability, not his or her capacity to manage debt."
