LORELY BURT MP VISITS SOLIHULL HOSPITAL TO HELP RAISE AWARENESS OF DEADLY DISEASE: OSTEOPOROSIS
5.16.41pm GMT Tue 30th Jan 2007
Solihull MP, Lorely Burt will visit Solihull Hospital on Monday 5th February (12.noon -main reception) to help raise awareness of Osteoporosis as part of a month of activities promoted by the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust.
Lorely Burt MP said:
"Osteoporosis is often overlooked but affects one in two women and one in five men over the age of 50, and can lead to death. The Trust's awareness campaign will help focus the minds of health professionals and the public about the seriousness of the illness and better ways to deal with it locally."
Nurse specialist Alison Doyle said:
"There is an increasing elderly population in our area and the likelihood of Osteoporosis is high. For example, Heartlands receives around 500 Osteoporosis fracturing patients a year, and that's only for the hip bone.
"Osteoporosis is known as the silent disease, which is due to the fact you don't know you have it until you sustain a fracture. The consequences of a fracture can vary from moderate to severe. At the least the patient will be in plaster for up to 6 weeks. However, some fractures can mean being unable to walk as well as they had done previously, and at times unable to return back to their homes to live independently.
"Spinal fractures are associated with a change in body shape with a curve at the top of the spine; these fractures are particularly painful and can lead to a progressive loss of quality of life."
