Government shutting down post offices with the death of many thousands of cuts - hemming - probably over 40 to close in Birmingham
11.25.41am GMT Sun 20th May 2007
Local MP John Hemming has slammed the government for pushing through another wave of post office closures. "On the basis of 2,500 closing nationally", he said, "at least 40 would be expected to go in Birmingham."
"Labour are closing down the post office network with the death of many thousands of cuts".
"Postwatch are powerless to resist and should be given the power to stop closures on behalf of consumers."
"Again the government are paying sub-postmaster to close more than what they would pay for them to remain open. It is an attempt to force people to use bank accounts rather than giro credits".
