LORELY BURT BACKS RESIDENTS AS POWELEAGUE KICKED TO TOUCH
10.17.23pm GMT Fri 25th May 2007
Solihull MP, Lorely Burt backed local residents as Powerleague's plans to build 11 all-weather pitches at Tudor Grange School were kicked to touch by Council's planning sub-committee last night.
Speaking at the meeting Lorely Burt said she had made every effort to keep an objective and balanced point of view, taking into consideration both the views of the school and the concerns of local residents. However, the Solihull MP spoke out against the application as she said the plans represented a large commercial venture in the middle of a quiet residential development and would change the character of the area.
Commenting on the decision, Mrs Burt said:
"I am aware of how important sports facilities are for young people and adults, but feel that the local environment will be changed to the detriment of nearby residents.
"Like all schools in the borough, Tudor Grange is strapped for cash and doing what it can to provide the very best for its children, so it is a shame they were forced to look towards a commercial enterprise to help to improve the school's facilities."
Liberal Democrat colleagues Councillor Andy Hodgson and newly elected Councillor Tim Hodgson also spoke in opposition to the application.
Councillor Tim Hodgson said:
"This is a victory for local democracy. I am delighted that the plans have been rejected and I would like to thank everyone in the community who put so much of their time into opposing these plans.
"I hope that the school will now listen to decision of the Planning Sub-Committee and withdraw their support for the scheme."
