SOLIHULL MP CAMPAIGNS IN WESTMINSTER TO LIFT WOMEN OUT OF POVERTY5.37.16pm GMT Wed 13th Jun 2007 Lorely Burt MP has co-sponsored a motion in Westminster calling on government to do more to help provide pathways to lift young, disadvantaged women out of poverty. The motion, which has attracted cross-party support, congratulates the YWCA on its 'More Than One Rung' initiative to help young women by tailoring careers advice, work experience and training as part of a package designed to address their needs. Lorely Burt MP said:
"More than a quarter of a million young women work in elementary jobs, ten per cent have no qualifications and one million are still living in poverty. "Government should respond positively to the YWCA's initiative and should initiate its own research into how to bridge the gender gap in apprenticeships, with far fewer women than men currently taking up opportunities."
