LISTEN TO THE BRITISH PEOPLE, NOT PRIVATE CONSULTANTS - BURT

11.18.38am GMT Tue 3rd Jul 2007

Solihull's MP, Lorely Burt, has today called on Gordon Brown to deliver on his promise to 'listen and learn' from the British people by seeking the views of those who work in key sectors, rather than spending huge amounts of public money on private consultants.

After signing an Early Day Motion, akin to a Parliamentary petition, Lorely said:

Lorely Burt MP

"The rhetoric from our new Prime Minister is welcome, but actions speak louder than words.

"If Gordon Brown is to prove that his new government is more about substance than spin, he must dispense with the focus-group culture that characterised the previous administration.

"Whilst policy-making is a complicated process, I believe that it is teachers who know best when it comes to teaching, doctors who know best where healthcare is concerned and carers who know how the elderly should be looked after - not a policy guru in Whitehall.

"Perhaps the public would have greater faith in their politicians if those in power trusted and listened to the people. I sincerely hope that we see an end to this waste of taxpayers' money, and that the bridges of trust between key sectors of society and government can be rebuilt."
