Brown has taken a pick and mix approach to constitutional change - Campbell

1.20.16pm GMT Wed 4th Jul 2007

Following today's statement on constitutional change by Gordon Brown, Liberal Democrat Leader Menzies Campbell said:

"The Prime Minister has taken a pick and mix approach to constitutional reform.

Sir Ming Campbell

"While we welcome many of the proposals the Prime Minister has put forward, he has failed to address the need for a fair voting system.

"British citizens are cheated by the present first-past-the-post electoral system as millions of votes do not count. Often the Government of the day is decided over a few marginal seats.

It is only when people are given fair votes that they will feel they have a real stake in the political process."
