LOCAL MP'S CONCERNS ANSWERED BY EUROPE

5.17.19pm GMT Fri 31st Aug 2007

The European Commission has published a draft Decision which addresses concerns expressed in Parliament by local MP Paul Keetch. Paul Keetch signed an Early Day Motion demanding that in future ordinary mobile phones should be able to work off satellites as well as masts on the ground. This would mean that in disasters like 7/7 in London, floods and fires across Europe, the emergency services would have back-up for their radio systems. People would also be able to get a phone signal in remote areas not currently served.

EURespond, a trans-Europe interest group campaigning for what is known as "resilient communications" has congratulated Paul Keetch on his stand.

Paul Keetch said, "I'm pleased that the European Commission has taken the first step in an allocation process for mobile telephone spectrum which recognizes the need for public good not just private profit. Europe has a unique opportunity in this process to provide the first ever European wide licence that will facilitate the deployment of a resilient communications network that is badly needed to enhance emergency response.

"It's now up to the European Parliament to agree the procedures so that new services can be introduced, and I hope they do so quickly."
