KEETCH BACKS A WINNER

Paul Keetch MP speaking at Party Conference 2004

Local MP, Paul Keetch, has backed a winner in offering his support to the Connect2 UK-wide project that aims to improve local travel in 79 communities by creating new walking and cycling routes for the local journeys we all make every day.

The winner of a huge £50 million Lottery grant chosen by public vote has been announced by Sir Clive Booth, chair of the Big Lottery Fund which distributes lottery grant money.

Of four shortlisted schemes, the Connect2 project has hit the jackpot in the People's £50 Million contest.

Paul's vote supported the Rotherwas River Wye Crossing scheme, part of the Connect2 project, which will make use of the existing sewer treatment works bridge, owned by Welsh Water, to make the vital crossing of the River Wye.

Commenting on the project, Paul said, "The River Wye and the railway serve as effective barriers to walking and cycling, especially to the south east of Hereford towards Rotherwas and the Holme Lacy campus. This proposal is a fantastic opportunity to promote and encourage more sustainable transport options in the city, something I have always been keen to advance."

"Journeying on foot or under pedal power, the scheme will provide a healthier, safer and more enjoyable option for everyone. Benefits for the local environement will include landscaping, seating and public art, to reflect the spirit and identity of the local community."
