Liz Lynne re-elected as Co-chair of cross-party Age Intergroup12.11.49pm GMT Wed 3rd Feb 2010 West Midlands region Lib Dem Euro MP Liz Lynne has been re-elected as Co-chair of the All Party Age Intergroup in the European Parliament. The Age Intergroup works hard in the European Parliament to promote the interest of older people and raise age related issues both within the Parliament and elsewhere. Liz Lynne has been a leading campaigner for the rights of older people and against age discrimination. She is also the First Vice President of the Parliament's Employment and Social Affairs Committee. Liz said: "I am delighted to have the opportunity to co-chair this intergroup for another term. The Parliament's Age Intergroup is one way we can highlight some of the key issues that affect older people. "Age based discrimination is rife in our society and I will ensure one of our priorities is to continue action to stamp this out, whether it happens in the workplace or in access to everyday goods and services. "I will also push the intergroup to do more to tackle the widespread abuse of older people, identify best practice in the provision of long term care and look at how different EU Member States deal with poverty among older people. These are all burning issues I hope we can take forward." ENDS Note:In 2000 Liz Lynne helped to draft the Parliament's Employment (Age) Directive that sought to outlaw discrimination on grounds of age in the workplace, a measure which has now been carried into UK law.
